Experience Six through Sound

We cordially welcomed Peter Rogers to Beach Hut Six, where he created tracks that incorporated the hut space and its serene surroundings on the picturesque Wells Beach, throughout every season. Immerse yourself in the sounds of the North Norfolk coast. We hope you enjoy the auditory journey.

About This Summer Track - In Peter’s Words
In preparation for writing this piece of music, I travelled to Wells-next-the-Sea in July 2022. The weather was beautiful: warm, bright and sunny, with very little wind. I was struck straight away by the expanse of the beach – the sea was half a mile out when I was there – and the vastness of the sky. Overall there was a relaxed, optimistic beauty about the scene which I wanted to evoke in the music I created. I made various field recordings of the sounds around the beach hut, the people, the birds overhead, and made some rough notes about various musical approaches I could try.

When it came to creating the track I based it around a recording of waves crashing and then receding; that eternal loop of the sea. I tried to create an optimistic, dreamy soundscape that also had a feeling of movement and dynamism in it. The beach was calm and serene but there was a lot going on too, with families playing games, couples walking their dogs in the distance, birds swooping and calling overhead. Overall I’m very happy with the way it turned out, as it really captures what I experienced and felt on that beautiful trip to the Norfolk coast.

About This Autumn Track - In Peter’s Words

My second trip to Wells-next-the-Sea came in mid-September of 2022. The weather that week had finally turned, the seemingly endless summer came to an abrupt end, so when I arrived it was cool and windy, with enormous clouds scudding across the sky. It came as no surprise to find the beach was a lot quieter than my previous visit, although the sea again was far out in the distance.

As a result, I wanted this second track to be slightly more sombre and reflective than the first, but still an attempt to capture the beauty of the beach and surrounding areas. The field recordings I made are full of wind, rustling leaves and gulls that were being buffeted by the wind. While I was there a rain shower blew in for about 10 minutes, then continued on its way, so I included a section in the track to reflect that. Overall I think it works well as a companion to the first track, and a record of a really magical place.

About This Winter Track - In Peter’s Words
It could not have been a more perfect winter day when I arrived in Wells-next-the-Sea in January of 2023 to record again. We’d already had a solid week of sub-zero temperatures across most of the UK, and when I arrived on the beach it was a gloriously sunny but bitingly cold day. The scene from the beach hut was pristine; a perfect blue sky above an empty beach, complete with frozen sand. Along with the lack of humans, there were fewer birds, save for a few pigeons, and Golden Plovers, well known in the area at this time of year. As a result I tried to encapsulate these two extremes in my composition; the empty, stark feeling of a beach in winter combined with the undeniable beauty and scope of the view. So I hope the music conveys that, combined with the sounds of me making a cup of tea: absolutely essential!

About This Spring Track -In Peter’s words

I returned to Wells-next-the Sea for my final trip at the end of April 2023. It had been just under 4 months since my last trip and the surroundings could not be more different. Gone was the frozen sand and biting wind; in its place, a beach and surrounding woodland that was bursting into life and full of the sound of spring. Chiffchaffs, great-tits, blackbirds, gulls, not to mention dog walkers and people out just enjoying the warmer weather. For this Spring composition I wanted to try and capture that feeling of everything coming to life, waking from its winter sleep and unfurling in every direction. It’s my favourite time of year, there’s always a feeling of hope and optimism in the air, and hopefully the music reflects that.
